Transformative Arts
This course offers opportunities to experience the
transformative power of the arts for self-development. It is also the
foundation for our Transformative Arts in Therapy training.
The course is based on the notion that engaging in a creative
process has the potential to connect us more deeply to ourselves and to
that which is beyond ourselves. Art strengthens us as individuals,
enabling us to find balance of soul and inner independence. Themes such
as the four elements and Goethe's Theory of Colour demonstrate the
linkage between our inner world and nature. Steiner's colour research
is also introduced.
The course focuses on developing skills and techniques in water
colour painting, drawing and clay modelling. These, along with cultural
visits, contribute to a rich programme intended to foster visual
literacy.
The course can be taken in one of two ways:
- A one year full-time course (Tuesday and Wednesdays plus one weekend per month). Student progression onto the Transformative Arts in Therapy training is subject to passing our Introduction/Assessment week.
- A two year weekend programme. This is conducted on a monthly rhythm with additional week-long summer intensives. This route is also available for those students wishing to progress onto the Transformative Arts in Therapy training, subject to passing our Introduction/Assessment week. However, homework will be expected of approximately 6 hours per week.
Both routes of this course are validated by the City and Guilds at Licentiate level, (LCGI).
Transformative Arts in Therapy Training
This therapy is the use of art for transformation and healing,
self-expression and reflection in a safe and facilitating environment.
Transformative Arts Therapists have considerable understanding of art
processes, underpinned by a sound knowledge of therapeutic practice
working with both individuals and groups.
The Transformative Arts Therapist’s work is challenging and calls for a training which combines theoretical with experiential work to develop the necessary skills and maturity.
"Whenever illness is associated with loss of soul, the arts emerge spontaneously as remedies, soul medicine." Shaun McNiff
